Google Is Giving Students a Free Year of Gemini AI Pro

Google is bringing back its student promotion for Gemini, giving eligible college & university students access to one of its paid AI plans for free for an entire year.

The company announced the offer on August 19 as part of its back-to-school push. Students in the United States can get Google AI Pro for free for 12 months, while eligible students in more than 140 countries outside the U.S. can get Google AI Plus at no cost for one year.

The promotion is similar to the student offer Google ran last year, which gave students access to its higher-tier AI tools during the academic year.

U.S. students get Google AI Pro for free

Eligible college students in the U.S. can claim a full year of Google AI Pro, which normally costs $19.99 per month. That makes the 12-month offer worth roughly $240 at the regular monthly price. The plan includes higher usage limits in Gemini, access to Gemini in Google apps such as Gmail and Google Docs, Gemini Spark and 5TB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. Google has also included YouTube Premium Lite with AI Pro, although availability of some benefits can vary by market.

Students in more than 140 countries get Google AI Plus

For students outside the U.S., Google is offering Google AI Plus free for 12 months too. AI Plus is the company's lower-priced paid AI plan and includes increased access to Gemini, including 2x the usage limits of the free tier, as well as access to Gemini Omni and 400GB of cloud storage.

The international offer is particularly notable because it isn't limited to a small number of markets. Google says the student promotion is available across more than 140 countries and territories, although individual eligibility, age requirements and feature availability can vary depending on the country.

Students outside the U.S. can also get AI Pro at a discount

Students who want the more capable AI Pro plan aren't completely left out. Google is also offering discounted AI Pro plans and bundles to eligible students in international markets. Students can receive discounts of up to 75% on a Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium Lite bundle.

Google is adding more AI tools for students

The free subscription isn't the only part of Google's student push.

They have introduced a dedicated student hub inside Gemini, designed to bring several study-focused tools into one place. Students can use it to create study notebooks, generate flashcards, build practice quizzes and create customized study plans. Google is also expanding Gemini's educational capabilities with features such as interactive 3D visuals and additional tools for researching and understanding course material.

The company is clearly positioning Gemini as more than a general-purpose chatbot, instead turning it into an AI-powered study assistant that can help students organize coursework and prepare for exams.

How long is the offer available?

Students have until December 31, 2026 to claim the promotion.

Those interested will need to verify their student status through Google's verification process, and eligibility requirements can vary depending on the country.
